Traffic congestion is one of the leading issues in most major cities around the world, including London. It increases air pollution—the biggest environmental threat—that affects our health and can cause damage to the body. London authorities have employed multiple schemes to minimise traffic congestion, including installing new cameras around the West London borough.

This will reduce traffic congestion and offer quieter, safer, and cleaner air for the local residents. If you’re a PCO car driver in Fulham and Hammersmith, these new changes might affect you. Keep reading to learn more.

Taking Shortcut Routes Can Result in Penalties

A few weeks back, Hammersmith and Fulham Council announced their plans to install smart number plate recognition cameras to discourage drivers from taking shorter routes. Despite several claims from business owners and residents about these rules being unfair to non-residents and increasing congestion in other parts of the city, the new cameras are now live in Fulham. Any non-resident driver entering the parts of a west London borough could be fined under the new proposals.

Over the past years, many out-of-borough drivers used the streets to the west as a shortcut. This led to heavy congestion around the area and caused many problems for the residents. Therefore, with these steps, the H&F council aims to clean the air and reduce congestion in the area.

Which Areas are Restricted and For Whom

After months of consultations with the residents, the H&F council installed cameras around Perrymead Street, Studdridge Street, Broomhouse Lane, Peterborough Road, and Hurlingham Road. These cameras will detect the number plates of non-residents. The following vehicles will be able to pass through the cameras without penalty:

If your PCO car isn’t registered in the borough, you will not be able to enter certain streets or will have to pay a penalty fee. You can check this map to learn more about the entry points of non-H&F registered vehicles.
